Fence repair in Los Angeles is rarely about a single storm. More often it is slow damage that a windy night finishes off. Sprinklers wet the bottom of the boards every morning, soil and mulch pile up against the fence, and termites find the damp wood. Posts rot at ground level while the rest of the fence looks fine. Then a Santa Ana wind arrives and a whole section goes over. We replace the failed posts, reuse sound rails and boards, and tell you what caused it so it does not repeat.
On hillside lots the cause is often the ground. Slopes creep, retaining walls lean and footings on the downhill side lose their grip after a wet winter. We check what moved before we fix what broke. In the flats, common calls are driveway gates that drag, vehicle damage to chain link and steel, wood sections fastened to a block wall that have pulled loose, and block walls that have cracked. A cracked or leaning masonry wall is a safety question in earthquake country, and we will say so plainly if it should come down.
When you call, send a photo and a rough length. We look at the whole run on site, not only the broken part, and we give you a written price for the repair and, if it is close, for replacement too. If the fence sits on a shared line, California law expects neighbors to share reasonable upkeep, so it helps to speak with the owner next door before work starts.
Fence repair in Los Angeles: common questions
Do I need a permit to repair a fence in Los Angeles?
Replacing boards, rails or a few posts at the same height and in the same place is ordinary maintenance. Raising the fence, rebuilding a block wall or working on a pool barrier is different. Ask us or LADBS before changing height or material.
Who pays to fix a fence on the property line?
California Civil Code section 841 presumes adjoining owners share equally in the reasonable cost of maintaining a boundary fence. It also requires 30 days of written notice to the neighbor before you can ask for a share. We can write a scope and price you can pass along.
My fence is in a fire hazard zone. Can I repair it in wood?
Check before you build. State Zone 0 rules for the first 5 feet around a house were adopted by the Board of Forestry in August 2026 but were not yet in force when we last checked. Many hillside owners already switch to metal for the section that meets the house.
