If wind or a storm took your fence down, take photos of the fence and of what hit it before anything is cleared, then call your insurer and a fence company. In Los Angeles the usual causes are Santa Ana winds in fall and winter, and the heavy rainstorms that soften the ground and bring down trees.
Half my fence blew down. Who can fix it fast and what will it cost?
Call or text us a photo and the rough length. A run that blew down with broken posts is a major repair, $900 to $2,500 in national 2026 figures. After a strong Santa Ana event every fence company in the county gets busy at once, so the sooner you call, the sooner you are on the schedule.
My dogs are in the yard and the fence is open to the road. What can be done right away?
We can close the gap for now. Standing posts are braced and a temporary panel goes across the opening until the permanent repair is done. Tell us when you call that dogs are in the yard or that a pool is now open to the street, so we know it cannot wait.
Is there an extra charge for emergency or weekend fence repair?
It varies by company, so ask at the start. Some charge a higher rate after hours and some do not offer it. A cheaper route is a quick temporary closure now and the full repair on a normal weekday.
Does homeowners insurance cover a fence knocked down by a storm or a tree?
Sometimes. Fences often fall under the other structures part of a homeowners policy, but what caused the damage, your deductible and your policy wording decide whether it pays. A modest repair may cost less than the deductible. Your agent or insurer has to answer that. We give you a written estimate to send them.
My neighbor's tree fell on my fence. Whose insurance pays?
In most cases your own policy covers your own fence, no matter whose tree it was. That can change if the tree was plainly dead or dangerous and the owner had been told. Check with your insurer. For a fence on the boundary, California's shared-fence law also applies, as covered below.
The insurer offered much less than the repair quote because the fence is old. Now what?
Request the adjuster's calculation in writing. Policies often pay the depreciated value of an old fence instead of the cost of a new one. Reply with an itemized estimate. If the gap does not close, fixing just the damaged stretch is often the practical way through.
The wind knocked the fence down and my neighbor says it is mine. Who pays?
For a fence on the boundary, California Civil Code section 841 presumes both owners benefit and share the reasonable cost of repair or replacement equally, unless a written agreement says otherwise. Whether the fence is in fact on the boundary is for a licensed land surveyor to say, not a fence company. See our shared fence page for the notice you have to give.
