A kennel or dog run in Los Angeles has to deal with heat before anything else. Summer afternoons in the Valley pass 100 degrees, and bare concrete and metal in full sun get far hotter than the air. We plan runs with shade in mind: along a north wall, under a tree, or with a roof panel or shade cloth over part of the top. Chain link is the usual material because air moves through it and it is easy to wash down.
We build kennels to fit the yard you have. Narrow side yards between a house and a block wall are a popular spot, and a gate at each end makes cleaning easy. For dogs that dig, we close the bottom with a concrete curb, a buried strip of mesh or a bottom rail. For climbers and jumpers we go taller or add a top. In the hills, coyotes are a real risk to small dogs, so owners there often ask for a fully roofed run.
Tell us the size and habits of your dog, how many dogs will share the space, and whether you want a fixed kennel or panels you can move. Renters should clear it with the landlord first. If the run is close to a neighbor's bedroom window, placement can save an argument later. We measure on site and give you a written price.
Dog kennels in Los Angeles: common questions
What size kennel do I need?
It depends on the dog and how long it will be in there. A run should let the dog trot a few strides and lie down in shade. Tell us the breed and weight and we will suggest a length, width and height.
Will a kennel keep coyotes out?
A fully enclosed run with a roof and a closed bottom edge gives the best protection. An open-topped run does not, because coyotes climb and jump well. We can add a top to most chain link kennels.
Does a dog run need a permit?
A simple chain link run within the city's fence height limit normally does not, but a roofed structure can be treated differently. We check with your building department if the design is tall or covered.
