Most installed fences cost $20 to $60 per linear foot in 2026, or $3,000 to $9,000 for 150 feet. Those numbers are national. What you pay in Los Angeles turns on local labor, the material, whether the lot is flat or on a hillside, and how far the crew has to carry everything from the street.
These price ranges are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. Los Angeles labor rates, material prices and the conditions on your lot move the real number up or down. Last checked October 2026.
How much does a fence cost per foot?
| Material | Installed cost per foot |
|---|---|
| Chain link | $9 to $30 |
| Wood | $20 to $50 |
| Vinyl | $30 to $60 |
| Aluminum | $25 to $75 |
| Wrought iron | $50 to $85 |
How much does a 6-foot wood privacy fence cost?
The national range for a 6-foot privacy fence is $25 to $60 per foot installed. The totals below use the general $20 to $60 range, and a tall solid fence falls in the upper part of each row because it uses more lumber. Here the species matters too. Redwood and cedar are priced by grade, and clear grades cost far more than knotty ones.
| Fence length | Typical installed cost |
|---|---|
| 50 feet | $1,000 to $3,000 |
| 100 feet | $2,000 to $6,000 |
| 150 feet | $3,000 to $9,000 |
| 200 feet | $4,000 to $12,000 |
What is the cheapest fence to have installed?
Chain link is the cheapest, from about $9 per foot in the national figures. For privacy on a tight budget, a simple dog-ear board fence in a common grade of wood is the least expensive solid option. Keeping a large dog in the yard on a budget is a job for 5 or 6 foot chain link, and privacy slats can go in later. Check your city first: West Hollywood, for example, does not allow permanent chain link.
Is black aluminum cheaper than wrought iron or vinyl?
It is cheaper than wrought iron and close to vinyl. The national figures put aluminum at $25 to $75 per foot, wrought iron at $50 to $85 and vinyl at $30 to $60. Aluminum will not rust in coastal air from Venice to San Pedro, and it will not burn, which is a real point in the hills.
How much extra does a gate cost?
Each gate is its own line on the estimate, not a per-foot charge. The width, the frame material, the hinges and the latch decide the price. A side-yard walk gate is the low end. A wide driveway gate with a motor, keypad and safety sensors is the high end.
How much extra for a slope, brush or an old fence?
We have to see the yard to say. In Los Angeles the common add-ons are hauling away the old fence, clearing dry brush, ivy or bougainvillea off the line, breaking out old concrete footings, and hillside labor where every post and bag of concrete is carried down steps by hand. Working beside an existing block wall also slows the job.
I got three quotes and they are far apart. Which one is realistic?
The realistic one is the bid whose written scope covers everything you asked for. Line the three up and compare footage, height, wood species and grade or the metal product, post size and depth, gates, tear-out, permit help and cleanup. A bid that is far lower has normally left something out. Look up each company on the Contractors State License Board site as well. A bidder without a licence is not offering the same thing.
Does a fence add value to my home?
A solid, tidy fence makes a house easier to sell, above all to buyers with kids, dogs or a pool, but do not expect to get the full cost back. For property taxes, the Los Angeles County Assessor decides what counts as assessable new construction, so put that question to that office.
